How do we make sense of the world?

Within Planet FM, a community radio station in Auckland, communities from around the globe intersect. Five of them invite us into their programmes and their communities—speaking not only of where they come from, but also of the country and the city that have welcomed them, offering a new perspective on Aotearoa.

Through discovering each community’s values and talents, the film explores how we experience the world as human beings. The insight each presenter gains from living in a different culture reveals how deeply the cultures we grow up in shape the way we act, perceive, and relate to others. As experiences and cultures intersect, a question gradually emerges: how can we draw on this shared human richness?

Many peoples, one film

Tonga
MO'ui Lelei Toulekeleka
Hosted by Taani, this programme is dedicated to older people and their wellbeing. This Tongan group carries many stories and a deep sense of warmth—māfana—as explaining the joy they find in coming together, and which they share with us.
Dalmatian
Dalmacian Radio
Nick hosts the programme Dalmatian Radio, playing music from the different regions that once made up the former Yugoslavia. He opens the door to a community that has lived in New Zealand for several generations, keeping its values and traditions very much alive.
Malayalam
Malayam Radio
Like many members of their community, Sindhu and George come from Kerala. They produce radio plays, music, and news for their community in Malayalam. A programme as vibrant as their community, which comes together throughout the events that mark the year.
Latin America
Latin Kiwi
Cecilia masterfully hosts her programme “Latin Kiwi” in Spanish, speaking to the vibrant Latin American community. She keeps them up to date with local events and invites us to dance and celebrate life the way Latin Americans do so well.
Ghanaian
Radio Akwaaba
Kwado and Kwabena host their radio programme “Radio Akwaaba” in English and in Akan. Together, with the Ghanaian Association of New Zealand, they bring their community together—building connections across generations while living in Auckland and contributing their diverse skills to their adopted country.
Auckland
A multicultural city.
Auckland is a character in its own right in this film. A city where 42% of the population was born overseas, it is a vibrant melting pot where stories, music, dance, and food intertwine—offering the perfect setting to take a closer look at how our cultural identities shape the way we see the world, and how, by exploring the diversity of our values and talents more deeply, we can all learn from one another.
